Twin-Tyred Posi Plug
A twin tyred seal with an integral inert gas or water barrier has been incorporated into the latest pipe plug on offer to those welding pipelines in the hydrocarbon and gas industries. International Pipeline Products Limited (iNPIPE Products) has combined the patented features of several of its long established pressure retaining pipe plugs to provide a unit that enhances the safety of operators and assets during routine welding procedures. The inflatable seals and gas-free barrier prevent the encroachment of flammable vapour into the hot-working area.
Designed to block and retain hazardous vapours in the pipeline, the Twin-Tyred Posi Plug has two inflatable tyres to seal against the pipe wall and hold it in position; while the cavity between the tyres can be filled with water or nitrogen to provide a gas-free barrier. The pipeline or vessel into which the Twin-Tyred Posi Plug can be vented through the body of the plug. Available in sizes from 2” to 24”, each unit can be used on pipes with a wall thickness between Schedule 10 and Schedule XS.
The Twin-Tyred Posi Plug is designed to withstand a differential pressure of 5 bar g on the downstream side of the pipeline or vessel, and a pressure indicator can be fitted into the body vent. The gas-free barrier between the tyres is pressurised with an inert gas or water to 3 bar g.
The Twin-Tyred Posi Plug was developed with the active encouragement of BP Coryton Refinery, following industry concern that civil engineering plugs/bungs which had been used for welding activities had been subject to a number of ‘blow-outs’. iNPIPE Products Posi Plug has been extensively used successfully over the last two years at the BP Coryton Refinery, Essex, England. The Twin-Tyred Posi Plug forms an essential safety addition to the Refinery’s Risk Assessment and Method Statements for welding activities on pipelines that have held hydrocarbon products.
